Case Study: Solving a Chaotic Mesh Wi-Fi Setup in Centurion
The Problem: Dropped Calls and Multiple Wi-Fi Names
Steve, a homeowner in a double-story property in Centurion, was battling an incredibly frustrating home network. In an attempt to get full coverage across both floors, he had gradually combined several different TP-Link Deco mesh systems with a mix of standard Wi-Fi range extenders.
While it initially seemed like a quick fix, the network quickly turned chaotic. The house was cluttered with multiple distinct Wi-Fi names. Worse, the signal would cut out entirely just a few meters away from a connection point. Because the extenders weren’t communicating properly with the mesh nodes, Steve’s devices would drop video calls and freeze up whenever he walked around the house—trapped in a loop as his phone bounced around searching for a stable connection.
Frustrated, Steve assumed his fibre line was underperforming and expected that he would need to switch fibre providers and scrap all his hardware to start from scratch. That’s when he called The Local IT Guy for a professional home network site survey.
The Solution: Smart Hardware Reuse and Hardwired Ethernet Backhaul
Our site inspection revealed that the fibre line wasn’t the issue at all—the backbone of the wireless network was simply bottlenecked by the wireless extenders. Instead of telling the client to throw everything away and spend a fortune on a completely new system, we designed a smart, cost-effective optimisation strategy:
Eliminating the Extenders: We retired the two problematic Wi-Fi extenders and replaced them with two matching TP-Link Deco nodes, creating a unified 7-node system alongside the 5 nodes he already owned.
Discrete Structured Cabling: Wireless mesh nodes lose speed when they talk to each other purely over the air, especially through thick double-story slabs. We discreetly ran solid copper LAN points directly to every single node. This created a dedicated gigabit ethernet backhaul, passing data smoothly via physical cables instead of congested airwaves.
A Single, Seamless Roaming Network: We wiped out the confusing list of multiple Wi-Fi names and consolidated the entire property under a single, seamless Wi-Fi network.
The Result: Flawless Whole-Home Wi-Fi
By hardwiring the backhaul, Steve’s TP-Link Deco system could finally operate exactly how it was designed to. Devices now transition flawlessly from node to node as you walk from the ground floor to the top floor without a single millisecond of dropped connection. Best of all, Steve saved money by safely reusing the bulk of the hardware he had already invested in.
