Cable Chaos

When a Server Room Starts Working Against You

Most cabinets start out clean: a switch, a router, a handful of patch leads. Then the business grows, a new department needs a drop, someone reroutes a cable during an outage at 6pm on a Friday, and nobody labels it. A few years in, that cabinet is a bird’s nest — and every one of those undocumented cables is a small risk sitting in your rack.

Messy cabling isn’t just an eyesore. Bundled cables block airflow and push intake temperatures up, which shortens the working life of switches, servers, and UPS units. Loose or unlabelled patching means a five-minute fault becomes a two-hour hunt through the rack. And in older installs, years of accumulated dust on fans, PSUs, and heatsinks is often the real reason hardware is running hotter than it should.

Local IT Guy gets server rooms and comms cabinets back under control — physically tidy, properly labelled, and documented so the next fault gets fixed in minutes, not hours. We work across Sandton, Midrand, Centurion, Randburg, Boksburg, and the greater Johannesburg and Pretoria area.

Our Cleaning Services

Dust is more than a nuisance; it’s an insulator. In high-density server environments, microscopic debris forces fans to work harder, shortening hardware lifespan and causing phantom reboots.

Cabinet Management & Cable Tidying

Turning chaotic rack wiring into a structured, labelled system you can actually read at a glance.

  • Trace, label & sort: Every Cat6/Cat6a copper run and fibre patch cord traced end-to-end and labelled to a consistent standard.
  • Rack and stack: Hardware reseated with proper weight balance, horizontal and vertical cable managers fitted, brush panels installed where needed.
  • Right-length patching: Oversized, looping patch leads replaced with correctly sized ones, opening up airflow and switch port visibility.

Deep Cleaning to HEPA Standard

Protecting the hardware itself from dust-driven thermal failure.

  • HEPA-filtered vacuuming: Anti-static HEPA vacuums remove conductive dust and debris down to 0.3-micron particles.
  • Anti-static wipe-down: Cabinet exteriors, server chassis, switch faces, and rack rails cleaned without disturbing live connections.
  • Sub-floor & overhead dust control: Dust cleared from raised access floors and overhead cable trays where applicable.

Legacy Equipment & Dead Cable Removal

Reclaiming rack space and airflow by taking out what’s no longer doing anything.

  • Dead cable trace & extraction: Abandoned copper runs and obsolete fibre identified and safely removed.
  • Hardware decommissioning: Old patch panels, dead switches, retired routers, and obsolete PDUs taken out of the cabinet.
  • Responsible e-waste disposal: Decommissioned hardware removed and disposed of through proper e-waste channels.

Cabling Audit & Documentation

So the layout lives on paper (and in your inbox), not just in one technician’s memory.

  • Port & VLAN mapping: Switch ports, patch panel terminations, and VLAN assignments documented in full.
  • As-built schematics: Rack elevation diagrams and cabling layout for faster troubleshooting down the line.
  • Health & compliance check: Flags for EMI risk, bend-radius violations, and physical bottlenecks in the current setup.

How It Works

01. Site Assessment

We walk the room (or review it over WhatsApp video for a rough scope) to see cabinet count, cable density, and any live-connection constraints before quoting.

02. Scheduled Cleanup

Work is scheduled around your operating hours — including after-hours and weekend slots — so the room stays live throughout.

03. Cable & Cabinet Work

Tracing, labelling, patching, and HEPA cleaning happen cabinet by cabinet, with live connections verified before and after each one is touched.

04. Documentation Handover

You receive the port/VLAN map, rack schematics, and a written report — plus before-and-after photos for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on live server rooms, or do we need downtime?

We work on live environments as standard. Each connection is verified before it’s touched and again once it’s re-terminated, so there’s no need to schedule downtime for a cleanup.

How long does a typical cleanup take?

A single cabinet is usually a half-day job. A full server room with two to four racks typically takes one to two days, depending on cable density and how much legacy equipment needs to come out.

Can you work after hours or over a weekend?

Yes. Most business cleanups are scheduled after-hours or over a weekend specifically to avoid disrupting staff or operations during the working week.

What happens to the old hardware you remove?

Decommissioned switches, routers, and PDUs are removed from site and disposed of through proper e-waste channels. If any of it still has resale or reuse value, we’ll flag that separately rather than assume it’s scrap.

Do we get documentation afterwards, or just a tidy cabinet?

Both. The Business and Enterprise packages include port and VLAN mapping plus as-built rack diagrams, so the next fault can be diagnosed from the documentation instead of by opening the cabinet and guessing.

Is this only for large offices, or do you do smaller cabinets too?

We do both. The Small Office package is built for a single rack or wall-mounted cabinet, right up to the Enterprise tier for multi-room, multi-site environments.
