So, I got a call from a lovely family right here in Midstream Estate. They were, in their own words, “at their wits’ end” with their internet. Sounds familiar, right? They were on the Supersonic 500/500 Mbps fibre package, which is a seriously solid line. But inside the house? It was a digital disaster zone.

The Problem: All the Gear, No Idea

Their main Zyxel router from Supersonic was parked in the lounge, which is a decent enough spot. But this is a big 4-bedroom home. To fight the dead zones, they’d invested in those cheap little WiFi extenders you pick up for about R319. You know the ones.

The result? A mess. They had a jungle of different networks (like “Home_WiFi” and “Home_WiFi_EXT”), and devices would cling to a weak signal instead of hopping to a stronger one. Speed tests were all over the show: 40Mbps on a bad day, maybe 137Mbps on a “good” one. And the outdoor area with the pool and the kids’ playground? A complete blackout zone. No tunes by the pool, nothing.

The Solution: No More Quick Fixes, Just the Right Fix

I popped over for a free, no-obligation site survey. My mission? To find the real solution, not just another sticky plaster. Those little plug-in extenders? They were halving the bandwidth and creating more problems than they solved. The answer was a proper, professional-grade unified system.

Here’s what we put on the table for the customer:

1. Out with the Old: We swapped that unreliable Zyxel router for a powerful Unifi Ultra Gateway Router. This beast handles the fibre connection smoothly and gives us incredible control.
2. The Backbone: We installed a 16-port Unifi PoE Switch in the garage cabinet. This is the heart of the operation, pumping both data and power through a single cable to all our access points.
3. Blanketed Coverage: We ran Cat 6a cabling through the ceiling (future-proofing for 10Gbps, because why not?) to four Unifi 7 Lite Access Points. These are sleek, ceiling-mounted units that pump out a strong, clean signal to every single bedroom and living area.
4. The Outdoor Oasis: For the pool and garden area, we added a tough Unifi 7 Outdoor Access Point. Now you can video call from the poolside or stream music without a drop-out.
5. Wired for Stability: All four TVs got a direct LAN connection. This stops them from hogging the WiFi and guarantees buffer-free 4K streaming.

The Result: Like Night and Day

The transformation was incredible. We set everything up with a single, seamless network. Your phone or laptop roams effortlessly from room to room, connecting to the strongest AP without you even noticing.

And the speed? Now it’s consistently within the 500Mbps range—everywhere. That’s what they’re paying for!

We also set up segmented VLANs for security: one for the family, a separate guest network for visitors, and even a dedicated SSID for all those IoT gadgets (like smart plugs and robots) that love the 2.4GHz band. It’s organised, secure, and blisteringly fast.
