Why Your Mesh Wi-Fi System Struggles in Some Houses (And It’s Not the Brand's Fault)

Over the years, I’ve installed just about every mesh Wi-Fi system under the sun—TP-Link Deco, Tenda Nova, Mercusys Halo, Asus ZenWiFi, you name it. In the right environment, they’re nothing short of magical. For small apartments and many mid-sized homes, they create a blanket of seamless, strong Wi-Fi without a single Ethernet cable in sight.

This makes them the go-to solution for so many of my clients, especially those in rented houses who understandably want to avoid permanent cabling. The promise is compelling: just plug in these sleek nodes, follow a simple app guide, and watch your dead zones disappear.

But then I get the call.

The call that starts with, “I bought this top-rated mesh system, but my video calls still freeze in the bedroom,” or “My gaming still lags upstairs. What gives?”

If this is you, please know this first: It almost certainly does not mean you bought a poor-quality product. The issue is almost always the house itself. Let’s break down why.

It’s Not the Mesh, It’s the Materials

The biggest misconception about Wi-Fi is that it’s just an invisible wave that effortlessly passes through everything. It doesn’t. Wi-Fi is a radio wave, and different building materials block or degrade it to wildly different degrees.

Think of your mesh nodes having a conversation. The satellite node in your hallway needs to clearly hear the base node near your router to relay a strong signal to your device.

Now, let’s look at what’s in your walls:

  • Drywall/Lath and Plaster: Fairly transparent to Wi-Fi. This is why mesh works great in many modern apartments.
  • Concrete & Brick: Wi-Fi Kryptonite. These dense materials are fantastic at absorbing radio waves. A single thick concrete wall can cut your signal strength by half or more.
  • Metal: Ductwork, metal studs, or even large appliances act like mirrors and shields, reflecting and blocking signals completely.
  • Water: Large aquariums and, crucially, pipes in your walls and floors are excellent at disrupting Wi-Fi signals.

In a house built with these materials, the wireless signal between your mesh nodes (what we call the “wireless backhaul”) is constantly fighting a losing battle. The nodes might stay connected, but the signal is so weak and degraded that performance plummets. You might see “full bars,” but your speeds will be a fraction of what they should be. This is the “strong signal, poor performance” paradox.

The “Wireless Backhaul” Bottleneck

This is the technical heart of the problem. In a wireless mesh system, the satellite nodes aren’t magic; they’re repeaters. They have to do double the work:

  1. Talk to the main hub.
  2. Talk to your device (phone, laptop, TV).

They do both of these tasks on the same radio bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz). This means they’re sharing airtime, cutting their capacity, and introducing latency. When the connection between nodes is weak due to obstructive walls, this entire process becomes inefficient and slow.

It’s like having a translator who has to whisper a message to someone across a loud, crowded room before they can then whisper it to you. The message gets through, but it’s slow, and details might get lost.

So, What’s the Solution? The Unpopular Truth.

As your Local IT Guy, my number one recommendation for fixing a poorly performing mesh system is almost always the same: Use an Ethernet cable to connect your nodes.

I know, I know. You bought a mesh system to avoid cables. I hear you. But hear me out.

When you connect your mesh nodes with a wired Ethernet cable, you give them a dedicated, super-fast, and zero-interference highway for their private communication (the backhaul). This completely eliminates the bottleneck.

  • The satellite node can now focus 100% of its power on talking to your devices.
  • You get dramatically higher speeds, lower latency (ping), and a rock-solid connection.
  • The system performs exactly as it was designed to.

“But I Hate Cables!” – We Can Help

This is where a good IT installer earns their keep. We understand the desire for a clean, cable-free look. The goal isn’t to have cables snaking across your hallways.

A professional can install Ethernet cables in a discreet and neat way:

  • Running them through walls, attics, or crawl spaces.
  • Using clever cable channels that match your wall colour.
  • Installing discrete wall ports so the nodes simply plug into a nearby outlet.

The node itself remains wire-free; it just has a single, thin cable running discreetly to a wall jack. It’s the best of both worlds: the performance of a wired network with the coverage and simplicity of a mesh system.

The Bottom Line

If your mesh Wi-Fi isn’t performing well, don’t immediately blame the hardware. Your house’s construction is the most likely culprit.

Before you return that mesh system:

  1. Experiment with placement. Sometimes moving a node just a few feet away from a metal duct or concrete pillar can make a world of difference.
  2. Consider your options for a single wired backhaul. Even wiring just one key node can transform the entire network’s performance.

If you’re in a rented home and wiring seems impossible, a powerful mesh system with a dedicated third band (like a tri-band system) for backhaul can help, but it will still struggle against the most obstructive materials.
