Do you know who to call when your WiFi Performance is poor?

Too many times people get stuck with not knowing who to contact when the WiFi is not working in certain rooms. We will quickly explain the difference between the Internet and WiFi. One would argue that they’re one thing while they actually are not.

Let’s explain this with a simple example.
The internet is like water, broadband ISP is the Municipal water meter and the wifi is the water tap. The Rand Water supplies your area with water, then the municipal installs meters to regulate and track usage. You then get a plumber who will come install the pipes in your home so that you can have running water in the kitchen, bathroom, and any other areas within your home with a tap.

So back to the internet and WiFi explanation. The internet in your home is supplied by your ISP (municipal) and comes with a standard router (tap next to the meter box). The router supplied can only broadcast WiFi signals in a short distance. If you want it to reach more places that’s when you’ll invest in getting a long-range high-speed router that supports the latest technology or you can get mesh WiFi system to blanket your whole home. This is similar to our example above of installing more taps so you can have water wherever it is needed most.

Who do you call and when?

When your internet is down completely you’ll call your ISP and advise them of the internet outage in your home. They’ll advise you to check if the router is on. Restart it, or in other cases, if this issue affects your whole area they’ll advise that the issue is being fixed. You call your ISP when your internet is down because you didn’t pay them and want to make payment arrangements.

Now then when your WiFi is not strong enough or disconnects a lot, you don’t call your ISP. This issue is not part of their service so they won’t be able to help you. The same as when you have a leaking pipe in your home. You won’t call your local municipal about your leaking pipe. You’ll call your local plumber, right?

It is the same case with your poor WiFi connection. No matter how fast your fibre internet is or how recent it was installed. The basic router that you get won’t always be able to cover your large home. The location of your fibre router also plays a crucial point so you ought to make sure it is installed in an area where you need internet most. When your WiFi is unable to reach every corner of your home, the ISP cannot be blamed. You need to invest in getting the issue fixed yourself as it is not related to the internet being down. You just need the WiFi to work everywhere in your home.
